Worst Class Ever Guide

Playing with friends: invites, rooms, LAN and join errors

Updated · Multiplayer

Quick answer

Open the in-game phone and invite Steam friends directly (added Demo 0.1.6), or pick a room from the public list. You can join a room between rounds (0.1.7). The November 10 build adds LAN mode and custom rooms with ~20 settings — player count, number of teachers, item spawn rates. If you "can't join" or see "version too low", both players must be on the same build: restart Steam to pull the update, then retry. There's no crossplay because there's only a PC version.

Three ways in

  1. Steam friend invite — from the in-game phone (0.1.6). Fastest for a private group.
  2. Public room list — refresh speed was improved on day one; rooms showing 0/6 were a bug fixed in 0.1.9.
  3. LAN — launch feature, for same-network parties.

Custom rooms at launch

The October 27 post lists roughly 20 adjustable settings: player count (up to 8), number of teachers, item spawn rates and more. That’s the official answer to “the teacher is too strong” — turn item spawns up or teachers down for your group.

Troubleshooting (from the forum)

Symptom What to do
Can’t join / room not found Both players update to the same build (restart Steam), then the host recreates the room
“Version too low” Same fix — one of you is on an older patch
Stuck on the loading bar Fixed twice (0.1.4, 0.1.9); if it recurs, back out and rejoin from the list
Black screen / crash on start Reported by several players; check the Steam page’s minimum specs (GTX 750 Ti, 4 GB RAM) and update GPU drivers
Lag / disconnects Server capacity was expanded in 0.1.6; players in China use accelerators. Nothing else official
20-player rooms Those are mods or private servers, not a supported feature — the launch cap is 8

FAQ

How do I invite a friend?

In the lobby, open the phone and send a Steam friend invite. Your friend accepts from Steam and lands in your room.

Can we join mid-match?

Not mid-round. Since 0.1.7 new players slot in when the current round ends.

What does 'version too low' mean?

Your builds differ. Both of you: close the game, let Steam finish updating, relaunch. The demo was patched almost daily, which is why this came up so often.

Is there a room code?

Not in the demo — invites go through Steam friends or the public list. Custom rooms arrive at launch; whether they use codes wasn't specified.

Can we play on LAN?

Yes from November 10 — LAN mode is in the launch feature list.

Is it cross-platform?

No. Windows only, so everyone's on Steam.

Does it have voice chat?

Yes, built in. A 0.1.6 fix addressed players not hearing others after joining.
